November 07, 2009 (Fulton Bottoms, USA) The University of Tennessee Men's Rugby Club welcomed alumni back to campus for Homecoming 2009. On Saturday, November 07 the undergrads squared off against the Old Boys in two alumni matches on the hallowed grounds of Fulton Bottoms Rugby Field.
After a show start and some minor schedule changes, the A side contest kicked off at 1:00 PM. In typical fashion the match featured some heavy pounding by the Old Boys and some exciting wide movements by the youngsters. Lots of scoring kept the crowd excited and the fans drastically increased as the game went on. Homecoming and a home football game that kicked off at 7:00 PM meant that there were plenty of interested on lookers. The very entertaining match ended up going the young bucks way as they outscored the Old Boys 8 tries to 6.
The Old Boys put on a superb demonstration of methodical ball control rugby combined with some strategic substitutions to beat back the young buck B side. The Old Boys pushed across three tries in the first half and then held off a late young buck rally to take the B match.
Overall a great day of rugby and a great day for Tennessee Rugby. About 50 Old Boys played on the day with another two dozen or so on the side taking in the action.
After the games were complete, the Rugby Class of 1970 hosted a social at Dead End Barbeque. Lots of stories were told, memories were relived and there was even a song or two delivered to the appreciative crowd. As the evening drew to an end, everyone began making plans for 2010 so that they could do it all over again...
