Mark Donaldson is a native of Minnesota and discovered rugby at Carleton College, where he also started three years and was captain of the football team, jumped for the track and field team, and played on the golf team while earning a degree in economics in 1973.

Following graduate school at Penn State, where he earned a masters degree in regional planning in 1975, Mark joined up with several of his Carleton teammates to start the Le Sueur Rugby Club, competing in the Minnesota Rugby Union for six years until the time between matches was shorter than the time required to recover from playing the last one.  He was twice chosen as a back for the Minnesota select-side to compete in annual regional tournaments.

Mark volunteered for duty with the University of Tennessee rugby team in 2010 in an effort to "pay back the game."

Mark has served as the executive director of the Knoxville-Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission since moving to Knoxville in 2005.

He and his wife Pat have a daughter, Lindsay, who teaches school in the Dallas, TX, area, and two sons, Scott and Justin, who live in Minnesota with their families.
