The Men's Rugby Club at the University of Tennessee

Volunteer Rugby Maxim - Family, School, Rugby...
A Tennessee rugby student athlete must always keep their priorities in the proper order and lead a disciplined lifestyle that assures compliance to the Volunteer Rugby Maxim: Family, School, Rugby - in that order. If a club member isn't taking care of the first two, they have no business being involved with the third. Rugby at Tennessee should enhance the collegiate experience; not be a detriment to it.

Standards of UTRFC Rugby
Personal Responsibility — Take personal responsibility in your faith, your family and your academics. Remember that your first responsibility is to your Faith and Family, then to academic achievement.
Sound Decision Making — Sound decision making under pressure is the cornerstone of a solid rugby player both on and off the field.
Integrity — Do the Right Thing, even if no one is looking.
Pride — Have pride in your sport, your club and yourself. As a rugby player, your actions reflect upon all those associated with rugby and all current members, volunteers and alumni of your club.
Organization — Maintain organization and commitment to your position and role on and off the field.
Respect — Have respect for the game and its tradition of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Be gracious in victory and humble in defeat.

Club Membership
New players are always welcome. All we ask is that you become a member of the club and recognize the Volunteer Rugby Maxim, Principles, and Standards. All students enrolled at the University of Tennessee are eligible and encouraged to participate in rugby - no experience is required. While there are no tryouts or required testing, rugby is a contact sport that requires a commitment to practice and physical fitness. Simply complete the membership forms and return them to a club officer or coach at your first practice.

Seasons and Practice
Rugby is played in two seasons.  The fall season begins when school starts and continues into early November.  The spring season begins in January and continues into April. The rugby club practices up to four times a week during the semester. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. practices are held at the Fulton Bottoms Rugby Field or the Tennessee RugbyPark.

Equipment
Typical practice attire consists of a pair of shorts, a sturdy shirt, a pair of cleats, and a mouthpiece. To participate on game day, you will be required to buy 2 pair of rugby shorts (black and white), 2 pair of official UTRFC socks, a training shirt and an official UTRFC polo shirt. Official team jerseys are maintained and supplied by the club.

Financial Requirements
As mentioned under equipment, you will be required to practice and game apparel. Also, the club has a participant dues system that each member is required to pay. These funds are used to cover team jerseys, balls and other equipment, and match day expenses. Additionally, players are required from time to time to pay a travel assessment to cover the expenses associated with extended trips - Fall Break Tour, National Tournament.

Academic Requirements
UTRFC expect all players to maintain a solid commitment to academic performance. The club offers the Academic Achievement and Advisory Program to assist and recognize students. Simply complete the Permission to Monitor FERPA enrollment form and return it to an officer or coach.

Prospective Student Athletes
With the rapid growth of high school rugby throughout Tennessee and the US, more high school seniors are choosing to continue their education at a college where they can also play rugby at the highest level. We welcome all incoming freshman to the club - both those with experience and those without. Additionally, each year students come to the club after transferring from other colleges or universities. We welcome all transferring students to the club and hope they enjoy their experience with UTRFC while they continue their academic work. Each year, UTRFC counts amount its membership students that are attending the university through an international exchange / work abroad program.

Academic Common Market
The Academic Common Market is a tuition-savings program for colleges in the sixteen state area served by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Students in the SREB member states who want to pursue degrees in fields that are not offered by their in-state institutions can enroll in out-of-state universities that offer the specialized degree program, and these students pay only the in-state tuition rates.
