May 5, 2017 (Maryville, Tennessee) Andy Dukes signed to accept the Volunteer Rugby Scholarship and play for the University of Tennessee on Friday at William Blount High School.  Head Coach Marty Bradley was on hand to welcome the newest Volunteer to the UT Rugby family.

The Volunteer Rugby Scholarship provides a combination of player stipend, full player kit and/or the waiver of the first year team fees for the freshman year. This combination of benefits is unique to each recipient and based on academic performance, rugby experience and character, commitment and devotion to the game as defined by the Tennessee Rugby Maxim:  Family-School-Rugby. While many very talented incoming freshmen commit to play for the Volunteers each fall, only a few are also selected for the honor of receiving the Volunteer Rugby Scholarship.

Andy, the son of Shauna Sharp and David Dukes, has played for the Bearden Rugby Team for the past two seasons. He actually began his rugby career in middle school with the Maryville Rugby Team and has now played rugby for 6 years.

“Andy is a great person, on and off the field. His positive, uplifting attitude has given life to the team whenever things were grim. His rugby IQ is very high, as he has played any position we have asked him with a high degree of efficiency. He has the ability to play any position in the backline. He plays much larger than his actual size, and does a great job of setting his teammates up for success."

The 5'11" / 170 lb back plays flyhalf, center and wing and plans to study Construction Science at Tennessee.
