Volunteers Allow Penn State to Escape
April 20, 2007 (State College, PA) — The Volunteers fought with the Nittany Lions for a full 80 minutes in a closely contested first round of the USA Rugby National Championship Tournament. Tennessee matched Penn State's pace and aggression for the entire match but in the end came up a point short of advancing to the quarterfinals of the national tournament. In the first half, PSU took advantage of a short field on turnovers and some timely kicking to forge a 24-13 halftime lead. After a few adjustments and reminders during the break, the Volunteers closed the gap by outscoring Penn State 17-7 in the second half but couldn't finish on a few promising possessions. Credit must be given to the Nittany Lions for their efficient defense that was able to turn back the Volunteer attack and preserve the victory.
