Old White tops Volunteers; UT bounces back to defeat Western Carolina and Kentucky
September 19, 2009 (Tennessee Rugby Park) — Atlanta Old White slotted a penalty kick with three minutes remaining to claim a well earned victory over the Tennessee Volunteers on Family Day in Knoxville. Atlanta enjoyed a significant advantage in field position for the majority of the first half but a stubborn Tennessee defense gave up a lone try. The Vols picked up the pace in the second half and were rewarded with a try late in the stanza only to see Old White put across the penalty kick in the closing minutes.
Tennessee reserves took on Western Carolina University in the second match on the day. After a clumsy start, the Volunteers settled into a good pattern and were rewarded with an 11 try effort.
In the third match on the afternoon, the Volunteer reserves took on the University of Kentucky. UK arrived a little short so the Vols split time helping out the Wildcats so the match would go off.
54 players took the field for the Volunteers on Saturday including 14 players pulling on the Tennessee jersey for the first time. A nice crowd showed up for the opening weekend at the Tennessee Rugby Park including family of many of the players in town for the annual Family Day event. |
