Volunteers fail in upset bid of Colorado
October 17, 2009 (Boulder, Colorado) — The Tennessee Volunteers gave it a good run but came up one possession short in its bid to upend nationally ranked University of Colorado in Boulder on Saturday. The Vols jumped to a first half lead only to see it slip away in the final 10 minutes in what proved to be a very entertaining match featuring 12 tries (6 tries for each team). Scoring seemed to hinge on mistakes as both teams swiftly capitalized on the other team's errant passes, dropped balls and lineout miscues. Seemingly any mistake on the field led to points. Solid restarts and a more expansive game plan enabled the Vols to maintain a pace of play that was required to keep up with the swift Buffalo backline and hard rucking forwards. After Colorado scored an impressive long range try to take the lead with only minutes remaining, the Volunteers had their opportunities but simply couldn't get it behind the stiff Buffalo defense.
The Volunteers took the reserve match with an impressive second half effort that featured 4 tries by the men in orange. This offensive production combined with a stiff defense that held CU out of the try zone during the final 40 minutes produced a decisive victory to close the 2009 fall break tour.
