Volunteers defeat LSU to claim the SEC Championship
October 24, 2009 (Birmingham, Alabama) — Tennessee defeated LSU for the 2009 SEC Tournament Championship on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Volunteers used solid restarts and a focused defensive effort to best the fast paced Tigers. UT ran across three tries while allowing only two - one well into bonus time to end of the first half and one while playing shorthanded due to a yellow card.

Tennessee reached the championship match with decisive wins against Alabama and Georgia. LSU had a convincing win over South Carolina to set up a rematch of the championship game. The Volunteers had squared off against LSU in both the 2007 and 2008 final, coming up just short on each occasion.
