Tennessee claimed the 2022 Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference with a hard fought 27-22 victory over the University of South Carolina on Saturday at the National Athletic Village Field at the Pier in Clemson, South Carolina. The win on Saturday is the 3rd consecutive conference championship for the Volunteers having also won in 2021 and 2019. (covid won 2020)
The Volunteers showed grit and determination with its roster depth after having to scratch 5 from the original lineup due to illness and injury. The Volunteers were up to the task with a try lead at halftime thanks to some strong running from Josh Shetler and Roman Funkhouser. The Gamecocks took the lead at the 61 minute mark only to see the Volunteers respond with two tries in the final 15 minutes. Tenacious defense from the Volunteers during the final moments preserved the victory and earned them the 2022 conference championship.
