Volunteers move to 3-0 with win over Georgia

By MTB, 10/03/16, 2:00PM EDT

Vols take 2 in Athens

Tennessee used a very clinical first quarter of the game to build a 4 try lead and then finished with two additional tries in the second half to take a 38-8 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Saturday.

The Volunteers forwards set the tone early with strong restarts and good continuity in the contact area while the backs got going in the second half with several nice kick counters and line breaks. It was a very clinical effort in the line outs while the scrums proved to be a bit more problematic because the Vols were unable to adapt to the referee's scrum law application. UT backs finally got an opportunity to play a team that used the kick and responded with several successful counter opportunities in the second half. There was no quit in the Bulldogs on the day however as they fought for a full 80 minutes in this traditional hard hitting Southeastern Conference battle. You can always count on a hard fought, emotionally charged battle in Athens and this year was no exception. Tip of the hat to the Bulldogs on an excellent afternoon of rugby.

The UT reserves got a rare opportunity to compete in an 80 minute contest against a very mature group of Georgia reserves. While fatigue definitely became a factor in the second half as the temperatures topped 85 degrees, the Volunteers were able to regroup after two solid UGA tries in the second half to take the 29-15 victory.

The victory sends the Volunteers into an open week with a 3-0 conference record and awaiting a much anticipated showdown with the South Carolina Gamecocks on October 22. Kickoff is set for 1 PM at the Tennessee Rugby Park and admission is free.
