Tennessee moves to 4-0 with a tough 13-10 victory over South Carolina on Saturday at the Tennessee Rugby Park. This pivotal East Division showdown is always a high emotion affair and this year's edition was no different.
The Volunteers controlled most the the territory throughout the match moving several times inside the Gamecock 22 only to turn it over due to impatience, lack of execution, poor decision making or an aggressive poaching USC defense. The Vols managed one try in the first half while being denied tries through a pushover scrum and a maul from a lineout that both crossed the line. A high penalty count on UT allowed USC to get into striking distance and they took full advantage to score and tie the game.
The Volunteers scored 5 minutes into the second half after Cormac Barry gains the linebreak and off loads to David Nuckolls for the try. UT gave up a try while playing a man down due to a yellow card and tied the game 10-10. UT continued to control most of the territory and did a much better job of retaining possession at the tackle in the second half. The Vols continued to pressure inside the 22 late in the second half and finally earned an offside penalty with 5 minutes to play. Ben Schwartz made the kick and the Vols regained the lead. Tennessee attacked off the kickoff and again flipped the field to make USC fight out of their own end with very few minutes remaining. The Vols were able to steal a lineout at midfield and cleared the ball to end the game.
A very poor first half against a well organized and experienced USC reserve side resulted in a 5-42 loss.
The win moves Tennessee to 4-0 in conference play with two games remaining on the regular season schedule. The Vols have qualified for post season play and now attempt to earn home field advantage for the semifinals.
Next Up: The Volunteers travel to Auburn on Saturday, October 29.
