The Volunteers assembled in Memphis during Fall Break to play a series of matches in front of their West Tennessee family, alumni, fans and supporters.  Three matches over two days were played at Farmington Park - the home of Germantown Rugby.

The Vols traveled with 35 players, leaving over 15 at home due to travel conflicts associated with fall break.

Thanks to all that came out to support the Volunteers.  Again this weekend,  the mass of orange on the sideline was overwhelming and very much appreciated.  Special thanks to Germantown Rugby for providing the high quality venue and to Jonathan Becraft for hosting the post match gathering on Friday night and for his assistance and hospitality throughout the weekend.

Match Summaries

University of Tennessee 5, University of Memphis 23
The youngest Vols were defeated by the University of Memphis 23-5. Good showing by our newest players with several playing their full first game of rugby and getting their most extensive minutes of the fall so far.  Tennessee started 7 Memphis area student athletes in the contest.

University of Tennessee 15, Memphis Blues 19
The Varsity Vols lost 19-15 to the Memphis Blues Mens Club. Hard fought game that showed a lot of maturity out of Vols as the learned the difference in college rugby and senior men’s rugby.

University of Tennessee 22, University of Arkansas 20
The Volunteers started fast and then held on in the final moments to defeat Arkansas.   Although both teams were less than full strength for this friendly, it produced some entertaining rugby with the UT forwards and the Razorbacks backs taking turns making key plays in the match.  A second half push over try and a timely line break by Patrick Beacom was just enough to put the Vols in front.  Great effort on defense and some untimely UA errors down the stretch proved to be the difference.
